Waipapa Point Lighthouse
Lighthouse | Wildlife | History
Historical shipwreck site & lighthouse. A great spot to encounter wildlife.
Waipapa Point is where New Zealand’s worst passenger shipwreck ocurred. On 29 April 1881, 131 people lost their lives when the steamer Tararua was wrecked on a coastal reef. The Tararua underwent regular trips between Otago and Melbourne, via Bluff.
Lots of wildlife to observe. Give seals and sea lions space. Where practicable stay at least 20 m away.
